Golf Scout – Privacy Policy
Last updated: 11 October 2026
- Your rounds, shots and clubs stay on your device and in your own iCloud account. We can't see them.
- Your location is used to measure distances. It's sent only to fetch the weather and the course maps for where you are, and we don't keep a record of where you've been.
- There's no account to create, no advertising and no tracking, and we never sell your data.
- We collect a small amount of anonymous usage information to understand how the app is used and to improve it.
Who we are
Golf Scout is made by Gruffydd Johnston, an independent developer. If you have any questions about this policy or your data, email hello@veglog.app.
Your golf data
Everything you record in Golf Scout stays on your device: your clubs and their distances, the shots you log (where each shot started and finished, the club and the date), your rounds and scores, the course and slope ratings you enter, your handicap, the greens and tees you put on the map, or move where the course map is wrong, and the scorecards you scan or type in.
If iCloud is turned on for the app, this data is also stored in your private iCloud database using Apple's CloudKit, so it syncs across your devices. Apple stores and protects it under your Apple Account. We don't run any servers for your golf data and can't access it.
The camera
If you scan a course's scorecard, the camera (or the photo you choose) is used only to read the card. The text is recognised on your device; the photo isn't kept or sent anywhere. What's read from it is saved with your golf data, in your iCloud.
Your location
Golf Scout uses your iPhone's location to measure distances, to work out which hole you're on and to mark where your shots finish. During a round it can keep using your location in the background, so the distances on your Lock Screen and Apple Watch stay up to date; iOS shows you when this is happening. You can change or turn off location access at any time in the Settings app.
Your location is processed on your device. It leaves your device only in these cases:
- Weather. To work out how the wind and temperature affect a shot, the app asks Apple's WeatherKit for the weather where you are. Apple handles this request under Apple's Privacy Policy.
- Course maps. To find courses near you and load a course's holes, greens and hazards, the app sends your location, or the course you pick, to the Golf Scout course server. The server uses it only to answer that request and doesn't store it with anything that identifies you.
- Maps. The satellite map comes from Apple Maps, so Apple receives the area of the map being shown, under Apple's Privacy Policy.
The course server runs on Cloudflare. Like any website, Cloudflare receives your IP address to deliver each request and uses it to protect the service from abuse, for example by limiting how many requests one address can make. Request logs, which can include the IP address and the location in the request, are kept only briefly for security and fixing faults. See Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.
Course maps come from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors. Our server fetches them; your device and your location aren't sent to OpenStreetMap.
If you use the Apple Watch app, your iPhone sends the course and distances straight to your watch.
Anonymous usage information
We use TelemetryDeck, a privacy-focused analytics service, to understand how the app is used. It receives simple events such as:
- the app being opened
- finishing the welcome screens, with the handicap you chose there
- the Golf Scout Pro screen being shown, and which plan was bought
- a distance being measured, a shot being logged (only the type of club, such as "iron") and a club being added
- a green being added to a hole that has no map (not where it is), and a scorecard being saved (not what's on it)
- a shot being marked during a round (and whether from the iPhone, the Watch or the Lock Screen), a hole plan being saved, and a round's shots being reviewed
Alongside these events it receives general technical details, such as device model, iOS version, app version, language and region.
These events never include your location, where your shots went, your scores, your name or your email address. TelemetryDeck replaces your device identifier with an anonymised one before storing anything and doesn't store IP addresses, so we can't identify you or link this information to you.
Purchases
Apple handles all Golf Scout Pro purchases and subscriptions, and we never receive your payment details. We use RevenueCat to check whether you have Pro and to manage subscriptions. RevenueCat receives a random identifier created when you install the app, your purchase history and basic device information such as app version and country. It doesn't receive your name or email address. See RevenueCat's Privacy Policy.
Emails to us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include in your message. We use it only to reply to you and delete it when it's no longer needed.
What we don't do
- We don't show ads or use advertising identifiers.
- We don't track you across other apps or websites.
- We don't sell or share your personal information.
- We don't keep a history of your location.
- We don't access Apple Health or your contacts. The only photo the app reads is one you pick to scan a scorecard.
Your choices
- To delete shots, swipe them away in History. Clubs and rounds can be deleted in the app too; deleting a round asks whether its shots go with it.
- Deleting the app removes the data stored on your device.
- To stop syncing, turn off iCloud for Golf Scout in the Settings app. To delete your iCloud copy, use iCloud storage settings (Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Storage).
- If you live in the UK or EU, you have rights under data protection law, including the right to access and delete personal data and to complain to a data protection authority, such as the ICO in the UK. We don't hold your golf data, and the analytics can't be linked to you, so in practice we hold no personal data about you unless you've emailed us. Contact us if you'd like any emails deleted.
Children
Golf Scout isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
If the way the app handles data changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
