How far does a 7 iron go at your swing speed?
At 78 mph of 7-iron club speed, Foresight Sports' reference tables give 109 mph of ball speed and 147 yards of carry; at 88 mph, 122 mph and 166 yards. That's roughly 2 yards of carry for every extra mile per hour. PGA Tour players average about 92 mph and carry it 176 yards.
7-iron carry by club speed
| Golfer | Club speed | Ball speed | Launch | Carry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slower swing (Foresight) | 78 mph | 109 mph | 18.4° | 147 yds |
| Faster swing (Foresight) | 88 mph | 122 mph | 15.1° | 166 yds |
| PGA Tour average (Trackman) | 92 mph | 123 mph | 176 yds |
Carry only. Foresight's figures are reference values from measured and calculated ball flights.
Between the two Foresight rows, each extra mile per hour of club speed adds about 1.9 yards of carry. That's our arithmetic from their table, not a published figure, but it's a fair rule of thumb across that range: a golfer at 83 mph would expect to carry a 7 iron about 157 yards.
Ball speed and smash factor
Ball speed divided by club speed is the smash factor, and it shows how well you strike the ball. The USGA's 2023 study of 627 recreational golfers found an average 7-iron smash factor of 1.37: so 80 mph of club speed would give about 110 mph of ball speed. Foresight's rows work out at about 1.39 to 1.40.
The same study found the smash factor was 1.33 off grass and 1.41 off mats. Mats tend to forgive a heavy strike, so the numbers you see in a simulator bay are likely to flatter you. Measure on grass if you can.
Only know your driver speed?
Most speed radars report driver speed. The USGA study found a 7 iron goes, on average, 22 yards plus 56% of driver distance. Using that with Foresight's optimised driver table, a driver speed of 85 mph suggests a 7 iron of about 145 yards, 95 mph about 164 yards and 105 mph about 186 yards. The swing speed calculator does this for any speed, and the swing speed and distance chart has the driver table and every iron.
Average 7-iron distance for amateurs
The USGA study measured an average 7-iron distance of 149 yards for men and 98 yards for women. It also found golfers overestimated their 7-iron distance by about 4%. For typical distances by handicap rather than speed, see how far you should hit a 7 iron.
Getting more from the speed you have
Carry follows ball speed, so a centred strike matters as much as the speed you swing. The difference between the grass and mat smash factors above, 1.33 against 1.41, is about 6% more ball speed from the same swing. Loft matters too: a 7 iron with 4° less loft goes noticeably further at the same speed, so compare speeds and distances only between clubs of similar loft.
