Swing speed and distance calculator
How far a driver can go at your club speed, and what that suggests for your 7 iron and pitching wedge. At 90 mph, an optimised drive carries about 215 yards and goes about 237 in total.
Driver distance by club speed
| Club speed | Ball speed | Carry | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 70 mph | 100 mph | 140 yds | 167 yds |
| 80 mph | 114 mph | 179 yds | 202 yds |
| 90 mph | 129 mph | 215 yds | 237 yds |
| 100 mph | 143 mph | 252 yds | 274 yds |

Where the numbers come from
- Carry and total come from Foresight Sports' optimised driver launch tables, taking the middle of each range. They're what's possible at each speed with ideal launch and spin, so most golfers hit it a little shorter.
- Ball speed is club speed × 1.43, the average driver smash factor in the USGA's 2023 study of 627 recreational golfers. The same study found each extra mile per hour of club speed adds about 2.84 yards.
- 7 iron and pitching wedge use that study's averages: a 7 iron goes 22 yards plus 56% of your driver distance, and a pitching wedge 22 yards plus 42%. For a 237-yard driver, that's about 154 and 121 yards.
