Is the Apple Watch SE good for golf?
Yes. The Apple Watch SE 3 has the GPS, Always-On display and battery a golf app needs: Apple quotes up to 18 hours of normal use, and up to 1,000 nits of brightness. Next to the Series 12 and Ultra 4 it has a dimmer screen in bright sun, a shorter battery and an aluminium case with Ion-X glass, but it shows the same golf distances.
This is about the Apple Watch SE 3, the SE that Apple sells as of October 2026. All the figures are from Apple's own specification pages.
What the SE 3 has for golf
- GPS. L1 GPS, with GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou. That's what a golf app uses to measure your distance to the green.
- An Always-On display. An Always-On Retina display (OLED and LTPO) up to 1,000 nits, so the screen stays on when your wrist is down.
- Battery. Up to 18 hours of normal use, or 32 hours in Low Power Mode. Fast charging gives up to 8 hours of normal use from 15 minutes on the charger, and up to 80% in about 45 minutes.
- Cellular, if you want it. The SE 3 comes in GPS and GPS + Cellular versions.
- Sensors. An optical heart sensor, a compass and an always-on altimeter. Golf is one of the workout types in Apple's Workout app, so you can log a round as exercise.
- Gestures. Double tap and wrist flick, as on the Series 12 and Ultra 4. Whether a golf app uses them depends on the app.
- Size. 40 mm or 44 mm cases in aluminium. The 40 mm weighs 26.3 g (GPS model) and the 44 mm 32.9 g, and both are 10.7 mm deep.

From Apple's technical specifications. Battery figures are Apple's own tests, and Apple says actual results vary.
For golf, two of those matter most:
- Brightness. On a sunny day the SE 3's screen reaches half the peak brightness of the Series 12 and a third of the Ultra 4's. Tilting your wrist out of the glare, or shading the screen with your hand, helps.
- Battery. A round with GPS running is harder work than Apple's normal-use test, so the 18 hours won't all be there for golf. A sensible plan is one round per full charge. For 36 holes, or a round at the end of a long day, charge it on the way to the course or look at the Ultra.
The rest is about durability, size and outdoor features beyond golf. The distances themselves come from the golf app and the course map it uses, so the same app shows the same yardages on every model.
Tips for golf on the SE
- Charge to full before the round, and give it 15 minutes on the charger if you've worn it all day.
- Keep the screen clean of sun cream: smears make a dimmer screen harder to read.
