Apple Watch Ultra for golf
The Apple Watch Ultra 4 runs the same golf apps as any Apple Watch, with three things that help on a course: up to 50 hours of battery in normal use (Apple's figure), a screen up to 3,000 nits for bright sun, and dual-frequency GPS. The trade-off is size: a 49 mm titanium case, the largest Apple makes.
This is about the Apple Watch Ultra 4, the Ultra Apple sells as of October 2026. Every figure is from Apple's own pages. Older Ultra models differ, so check Apple's compare page for yours.
What the Ultra does for golf
A golf app shows the same distances on an Ultra as on any other Apple Watch, because the yardages come from the app and its course map. What the Ultra changes is how long the watch lasts, how easy the screen is to read, and how it's built.
Battery
Apple quotes up to 50 hours of normal use and up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode, against 24 and 38 hours for the Series 12 and 18 and 32 for the SE 3. For workouts, Apple quotes up to 18 hours of standard workout tracking on the Ultra 4. A round with GPS running all the time uses more power than Apple's normal-use test, and Apple says results vary, but with about twice the Series 12's battery, the Ultra is the model most likely to see you through 36 holes, or a few days of golf between charges. Fifteen minutes of fast charging gives up to 18 hours of normal use.
Screen
An Always-On Retina display with wide-angle OLEDs, up to 3,000 nits at peak. That's three times the SE 3 (1,000 nits) and half as much again as the Series 12 (2,000 nits). That's the difference that matters on a bright summer's day. The front is flat sapphire crystal, and the Modular Ultra, Wayfinder and Orienteering faces have a Night Mode.
GPS
The Ultra 4 has precision dual-frequency GPS (GPS, Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou); the SE 3 and Series 12 use L1 GPS. Apple calls the Ultra 4's GPS the most accurate on-device GPS in a sports watch, in its own comparison against other dual-frequency sports watches. On a golf course, how close the yardage is also depends on how well the course is mapped, so the map matters too.
Action button
The Action button can be set to start a workout, mark a segment or turn on the torch, among other things. So you can start a Golf workout in Apple's Workout app on the first tee with one press. Holding it sounds a siren.
Built for outdoors
A grade 5 titanium case, 100 m water resistance and satellite messaging (Emergency SOS, Messages and Find My) where there's no mobile signal. None of that changes your yardages.
What to weigh up
- Size. The case is 49 mm tall, 44 mm wide and 12 mm deep, against 42 or 46 mm for the Series 12 and 40 or 44 mm for the SE 3. A bigger watch is easier to notice during the swing, so try one on and make a few practice swings before deciding.
- Which wrist. If the watch feels in the way at the top of the backswing, try it on the other wrist or with a looser strap.
- What you'll use beyond golf. Much of what the Ultra adds, such as diving to 40 m and satellite messaging, is for sports and places beyond golf. If you only want yardages for one round at a time, every current model does that, as our guide to the SE for golf shows.
Setting it up for golf
It's the same as any Apple Watch: install a golf app on your iPhone, add its watch app, and start the round on the first tee. Our guide to using Apple Watch for golf walks through it, with the rules on distance devices in competitions. If you plan to leave your phone in the bag or at home, read using Apple Watch for golf without your iPhone first: whether that works depends on the golf app, not on the watch.
