How far should a senior golfer hit each club?
There's no separate senior chart, because distance follows swing speed, not age. As a guide, a senior with 80 mph of driver speed hits a good drive about 202 yards, a 7 iron about 135 and a pitching wedge about 107. The USGA found that 90% of men aged 60 to 74 carry a driver at least 130 yards and a 7 iron at least 91.
Senior club distance chart by swing speed
Swing speed is the best single guide to distance at any age. In the USGA's 2023 study of 627 golfers, most of whom were 45 to 74, club speed explained 92% of the difference in driver distance. Here's what slower speeds produce:
| Driver speed | Driver | 7 iron | Pitching wedge |
|---|---|---|---|
| 70 mph | 167 | 116 | 92 |
| 75 mph | 184 | 125 | 99 |
| 80 mph | 202 | 135 | 107 |
| 85 mph | 219 | 145 | 114 |
| 90 mph | 237 | 154 | 121 |
Total distance in yards. Driver from Foresight Sports' optimised launch table, so a well-struck drive; 7 iron and wedge from the USGA's 2023 averages for golfers with that driver distance.
Don't know your speed? A launch monitor at a range or club fitter will measure it in a few swings. The swing speed calculator covers speeds from 69 to 145 mph.
The whole bag by handicap
If you know your handicap but not your speed, this is the rest of the bag at mid and high handicaps:
| Club | 10 hcp | 15 hcp | 20 hcp | 28 hcp | 36 hcp |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Driver | 245 | 229 | 212 | 182 | 161 |
| 3-wood | 214 | 200 | 185 | 158 | 141 |
| 5-wood | 200 | 188 | 174 | 149 | 132 |
| 7-wood | 189 | 177 | 164 | 140 | 124 |
| 4-hybrid | 186 | 174 | 161 | 138 | 122 |
| 5-hybrid | 177 | 166 | 154 | 131 | 117 |
| 6-iron | 169 | 158 | 147 | 125 | 111 |
| 7-iron | 153 | 143 | 133 | 114 | 101 |
| 8-iron | 141 | 132 | 122 | 104 | 93 |
| 9-iron | 129 | 121 | 112 | 96 | 85 |
| Pitching wedge | 117 | 110 | 102 | 87 | 77 |
| Sand wedge | 87 | 82 | 76 | 65 | 57 |
Typical total distance in yards, carry plus roll, on a still day at sea level. The same figures as the club distance chart.
The chart is by handicap for golfers of all ages. If you've lost distance but kept your short game, your handicap may flatter your long clubs, so start from the swing speed table for those.
What the USGA found about age
The study doesn't give average distances by age, but it does give the carry that 90% of golfers in each age group reach (the 10th percentile):
| Age | Men: driver | Men: 7 iron | Women: driver | Women: 7 iron |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 45 to 59 | 150 | 102 | 74 | 43 |
| 60 to 74 | 130 | 91 | 62 | 19 |
| Over 74 | 111 | 51 | 53 | 19 |

The USGA concluded that distance generally falls as golfers age, and that ageing affects women more than men. The driver distance by age guide has every age group.
Senior tour players
Professionals join PGA Tour Champions when they turn 50. In 2025 that tour averaged 282.7 yards on its measured driving holes, against 302.8 on the PGA Tour: about 20 yards less.
Setting up a bag for a slower swing
- Swap long irons for woods and hybrids. A common approach is to keep irons only down to the club you can still get airborne and stop on a green. On our chart a 28-handicapper's 7 wood goes 140 yards and 5 hybrid 131, both of which you may find easier to get airborne than a long iron.
- Check the lofts. Some irons are sold in higher-launching versions with weaker lofts. Titleist's T250 7 iron, for example, is 30.5°, and its T250 Launch Spec 7 iron is 35°. As a rule of thumb, a weaker loft flies a little shorter and higher, which can help a slower swing stop the ball on a green.
- Re-check the gaps. As distance drops, the gaps between clubs shrink, and two clubs can end up going the same distance. The club gapping calculator shows where.
- Play from the right tee. A common approach is to move forward a set of tees if you're hitting long clubs into most par 4s, so you're hitting the same clubs into greens as you used to.
Measure, don't remember
Whatever your age, play to today's numbers, not the ones you remember. Measure your clubs again every season, on the course, and take the middle of 10 shots.
