How strokes gained works

Every position on a hole has an expected number of strokes to hole out from it. A shot gains the expected strokes from where it was played, less the expected strokes from where it finished, less the one stroke it took.

A scratch golfer is expected to take 4.34 strokes from a 410-yard tee, 3.20 from 160 yards on the fairway and 2.00 from 25 feet on the green. A drive to 160 yards in the fairway gains 4.34 − 3.20 − 1 = 0.13 strokes. An approach to 25 feet gains 0.20.

Distances on the green are in feet; everywhere else they're in yards. The expected strokes are Golf Scout's own model, fitted to published tour and handicap figures and scaled for each handicap; the app uses the same one.

Golf Scout Pro works out strokes gained for every shot you mark, off the tee, on approach, around the green and putting. Get it on the App Store.
